Most local service businesses spend all of their attention on Google. That makes sense, because Google handles the majority of searches. But there is a large blind spot in that strategy: every iPhone, iPad and Mac defaults to Apple Maps, not Google Maps. When someone on an iPhone asks Siri to "call the nearest plumber," searches in Spotlight, or taps an address in a text message, the answer comes from Apple's map data, not Google's. If you have never claimed your business in Apple Business Connect, that customer sees whatever Apple guessed about you, which is often incomplete, outdated, or simply wrong.
Roughly half of smartphone users across the United States, Canada and Australia carry iPhones. That is not a rounding error. It is half of your potential local market seeing a different listing than the one you have carefully polished on Google. The good news: Apple Business Connect is free, claiming a place card takes one sitting, and very few of your competitors have bothered. This guide walks through exactly what to do.
Apple Maps is not Google, and it does not pull from Google
This is the single most common misunderstanding we hear from business owners. Apple Maps and Google Maps are separate products from separate companies with separate databases. Optimizing your Google Business Profile does nothing for Apple, and Apple does not copy your Google hours, photos or categories. The "place card" is Apple's equivalent of a Google Business Profile, and you manage it at businessconnect.apple.com.
Where your Apple place card shows up is broader than a lot of people realize. It powers the result when someone:
- Searches for a business or "near me" category directly in the Apple Maps app.
- Asks Siri to call you, get directions, or find a nearby service.
- Uses Spotlight search on an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Taps a business name or address inside Messages, Mail, Calendar or Safari.
- Looks at your location through CarPlay while driving.
If your place card is unclaimed, all of those surfaces show Apple's best guess. We have seen businesses with wrong hours, a competitor's phone number, or a pin dropped two streets away, all because nobody ever claimed the listing.
Step 1: Claim and verify your place card
Go to businessconnect.apple.com and sign in with an Apple Account (a personal one is fine to start). Search for your business. If Apple already has a record, claim it; if not, create a new business. You will enter your name, address and phone exactly as they appear everywhere else, then choose a verification method. Apple usually verifies by an automated phone call or text to your listed business number, which confirms in minutes. For some businesses Apple asks for documents instead, and that manual review takes a few business days. You cannot edit the live card until verification clears, so start here first.
One detail that trips people up: the name, address and phone (your NAP) must match your Google listing and your website character for character. "Suite 4" on one and "Ste. 4" on another is enough to create a data conflict that hurts you on both platforms.
Step 2: Fill in categories, hours and the basics
Once verified, build the card out completely. Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant additional categories so Apple understands the full range of what you do. Set hours for every day, and add special hours for holidays so customers are not told you are open when you are closed. Add your website and a clean business description. If you are a service-area business that travels to customers rather than running a storefront, set your service areas instead of publishing a home address.
Step 3: Add photos and action links that drive contact
Apple lets you upload a logo, a cover photo and a gallery. Use real, well-lit photos of your team, your work and your vehicles rather than stock images, because that is what builds trust on the card. Then set up action links, which are the buttons customers tap. Depending on your business you can enable:
- Call, so Siri and the card dial the right number.
- Directions, pointing to the correct pin.
- Website, sending people to a page that loads fast on mobile.
- Booking or order links, if you use a supported reservation or scheduling provider.
Action links are where Apple Business Connect quietly earns its keep. A correct "Call" button on a verified card turns a Siri voice search into a ringing phone.
Step 4: Use Showcases and keep the card alive
Apple offers "Showcases," which are promotional cards you can publish for offers, events, new services or seasonal pushes. They appear on your place card and in Apple Maps, similar in spirit to a Google post. They are not a set-and-forget feature; refresh them when an offer ends. Beyond Showcases, treat the card the way you treat your Google listing: review it every quarter, update hours before holidays, swap in new photos, and fix anything Apple may have auto-changed.
Keep Apple and Google consistent
The biggest mistake is treating Apple as a one-time chore. Whenever your hours, address, phone or services change, update both platforms the same day. Consistent NAP across Apple, Google and your citations is a trust signal everywhere, and inconsistency is one of the most common reasons a business looks wrong to half its customers. If you want a quick read on whether your Google side is solid before you sync it across, run our GBP scorecard and the free map rank check, then mirror what you fix onto Apple. When you are ready to make this part of an ongoing system rather than a scramble, our local SEO plan covers both platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple Business Connect the same as Google Business Profile?
No. They are completely separate systems run by different companies. Apple Business Connect controls how you appear on Apple Maps, Siri and Spotlight across Apple devices; Google Business Profile controls Google Search and Maps. Optimizing one does nothing for the other, so claim and maintain both.
Does Apple Business Connect cost anything?
No. Claiming and managing your place card at businessconnect.apple.com is free, including categories, photos, hours, action links and Showcase promotions. Apple monetizes through Apple Maps ads and other products, not the basic listing.
How long does Apple verification take?
Phone or text verification is usually confirmed within minutes. If Apple needs a manual document review, approval typically takes a few business days. You cannot edit the live card until you are verified, so begin early.
Why should a service business bother with Apple Maps?
About half of smartphone users in the US, Canada and Australia carry iPhones, and those default to Apple Maps, Siri and Spotlight. If you are not claimed in Apple Business Connect, every one of those customers may see an incomplete or wrong listing when they search, call or get directions.
