The Google Business Profile description is the short "from the business" paragraph that appears on your profile, below your reviews and category. It is one of the few places where you get to talk to a potential customer in your own words. Most local businesses either leave it blank, paste in a wall of keywords, or write something so generic it could belong to any company in town. None of those help.
This guide gives you a simple formula, the rules Google enforces, and four copy-paste example descriptions you can adapt for your own trade in a couple of minutes. If you would rather skip straight to a draft, our free GBP description generator builds one for you from a few answers.
What the description does (and does not) do
First, a myth worth killing: the description is not a ranking factor. Google has stated plainly that the business description does not influence where you appear in the Map Pack. Stuffing it with "best plumber Phoenix emergency plumber 24 hour plumber" does nothing for your position and risks the whole paragraph being rejected.
So why bother? Because it does two things that matter a great deal:
- It converts. Someone comparing three profiles reads the description to decide who feels trustworthy, established, and right for their job. A clear, confident paragraph can be the tie-breaker that earns the call.
- It can surface in AI answers. Google's AI overviews and assistant-style summaries increasingly pull from profile text. A well-written description gives those systems clean, quotable sentences about who you are and what you do.
Think of it as a conversion and trust asset, not an SEO lever. That single shift changes how you write it.
The rules Google enforces
The description has a hard limit of 750 characters, and on most phones only the first 250 or so show before a "Read more" link. Beyond length, Google's content guidelines prohibit several things, and breaking them can get your text rejected during review:
- No URLs, links, or HTML of any kind.
- No phone numbers (your phone field already covers that).
- No promotional or sales language: prices, discount codes, "50% off this week", "call now for a free quote".
- No keyword stuffing or repeated category names.
- No offensive, misleading, or off-topic content.
Write it like you are introducing your business to a neighbor, not writing an ad.
A simple formula that works
You do not need to be a copywriter. Almost every strong description follows the same five-part order:
- Who you are - business name and the one thing you primarily do.
- What you do - your core services, named plainly.
- Areas served - the city and surrounding neighborhoods or towns.
- What makes you different - years in business, licensing, family-owned, same-day, warranties.
- A soft close - an inviting line like "Reach out to schedule a visit", with no hard sell and no phone number.
The other rule: front-load the first 250 characters. Because that is all most people see before tapping "Read more", your name, your main service, and your service area should all appear in the opening sentence or two. Everything that builds extra trust can come after.
Four copy-paste example descriptions
Swap in your own name, city, and details. Each of these sits comfortably under 750 characters and front-loads the essentials.

How to publish and refine it
Add or edit your description from the "Edit profile" section of your Google Business Profile, under "Business description". Paste your draft, check it reads cleanly on a phone preview, and save. Google reviews changes, which can take a short while to go live.
Once it is published, treat it as something you revisit, not a set-and-forget field. If you add a service, change your service area, or earn a new certification, update the opening lines so they stay accurate. Want a second opinion on the rest of your profile? Run it through our free GBP Scorecard, or check where you currently rank on the map for your main service.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Google Business Profile description affect ranking?
No. Google has confirmed the business description is not a ranking factor for the Map Pack, so keyword stuffing it does nothing for your position. It does affect conversions and trust, and it can be quoted in AI-generated summaries, which is why it is still worth writing well.
How long can a Google Business Profile description be?
The description can be up to 750 characters. Only the first 250 or so are shown before a "Read more" link on most devices, so front-load who you are, what you do, and where you serve in the opening sentences.
What is not allowed in a Google Business Profile description?
Google prohibits URLs and links, HTML, phone numbers, promotional or sales language such as discount codes, offensive content, and keyword stuffing. Descriptions that break these rules can be rejected or removed during review.
Can I copy the same description across multiple locations?
You can, but it is better to vary each location's description so the city or neighborhood served is named specifically. Localized, unique descriptions read as more credible to customers and avoid looking like duplicated boilerplate.
