The geo-grid is the heart of the Map Rank Check, and once you understand how to read it, you understand your local SEO. Each of the nine tiles represents a point on a grid around your business, and the number on it is where you rank when someone searches from that exact spot. Google does not show everyone the same results - proximity is a real ranking factor - so your position genuinely changes as the searcher moves.

Green tiles mean you are in the top three from that location: the Map Pack, where the vast majority of clicks and calls happen. Amber means you are visible but ranked four to ten, where you are technically present but most searchers never scroll to see you. Red means you are eleventh or worse, effectively invisible. The goal of all local SEO work is to turn red and amber into green across as wide an area as possible.

The pattern matters more than any single tile. If your green is tightly clustered around your own pin and fades to red at the edges, proximity is carrying you and your other signals are weak - you win only when you are physically the closest option. If you see red right next to your address, that is the most diagnostic signal of all: it almost always points to a Google Business Profile problem, like a missing primary category, thin photos, or weak review signals.

The four KPIs put numbers to the picture. Average map rank summarises your typical position across all nine points. Best position shows your ceiling - the best you achieve anywhere. Areas you appear in and areas in the top three quantify your reach and your real Map Pack footprint. Together they let you track progress over time: re-run the scan monthly and watch the average climb and the green spread.

What this score will not tell you is exactly which lever to pull - that requires a deeper audit of your profile, reviews, and citations. But it tells you the single most important thing: whether you have a visibility problem at all, and roughly how big it is. For most local businesses, the gap between where they think they rank and where they actually rank is the most expensive blind spot in their marketing.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Identify your green tiles - these are your Map Pack wins.
  2. Note the amber tiles - visible but below the fold for most searchers.
  3. Flag the red tiles, especially any near your own address.
  4. Check your average rank and best position KPIs for the overall picture.
  5. Re-run monthly and track whether green is spreading outward.
